There is a new bill in New York City that could make it possible for small businesses facing eviction to receive free legal counsel. This is in response to the increased eviction rate in the city over the last two years. Small businesses are very important aspects of communities, because they create local opportunities for citizens.

This is an opportunity for small businesses, because if they are not making rent payments then they definitely will not be able to afford good legal counsel to help them stay in business. It gives the small business a valuable resource, because negotiation through legal counsel can sometimes help them stay in business. This is very important for small businesses, because they should not have to lose everything and suffer for a couple of missed lease payments.

This relates to our class, because if more cities are willing to adopt this policy then less people will be discouraged from starting a small business. Every city needs small businesses and cannot rely on large multinational corporations to provide enough local opportunities for the entire city population. This is a step in the right direction in terms of protecting small businesses from greedy landlords and large corporations in the community.
