Amazon Recalls Portable Battery Chargers

The affected portable battery chargers were sold on Amazon.com, Amazon Bookstores and Amazon Pop-Up Stores from December 2014 through July 2017.

After receiving 53 reports about defective power banks, Amazon has voluntarily recalled their portable battery chargers.

AmazonBasics portable battery chargers have been recalled due to potential fire and chemical burn risks, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Reports received by Amazon include cases of chemical burns due to contact with battery acid and four reports of property damage, including fire and smoke damage.

Amazon issued a note that all consumers should immediately unplug and cease to use the recalled power banks. Further, consumers should find out how to return the devices and get a full refund for the recalled product.

This article is relevant to this class because Amazon is going to have to alter their imperfect product. Amazon has realized that they must satisfy their customers by fixing their product and refunding those customers for faulty power banks. The key issue is that they failed to provide their product at the best quality and best value for the price. These power banks have been sold frequently on Amazon.com for $40 and at this price the consumers were not provided with the best quality. If not recalled and offered a refund by Amazon, this faulty product could hurt their overall branding effort. Amazon does not want to be known for products that must be recalled, but instead wants to be a reliable brand.

Amazon's popularity is continually on the rise, but they must continue to perfect their products in order to maintain their reliability to avoid sales declines. I believe that Amazon made the right decision in voluntarily recalling their power banks because this shows that Amazon really cares about their target market.

  1. I am surprised that their sales did not decrease. If it were me, I would hate having to go through the hassle of returning the product causing me just to never order the product again. Some people may even post bad reviews and lead others to do the same leading to decrease in sales as well.

  2. That is surprising sales didn't decrease but then again, its amazon...There popularity is very high so a few bad reviews won't kill there profits or reputation

  3. Amazon is taking responsibility by recalling their faulty portable batteries. If amazon decided to not make a formal announcement about the recall or failed to even announce it at all, it would ultimately hurt their brand and their reputation. One faulty mistake can lead to many longtime users to switch gears and abandon Amazon.
