Wi-Fi Dangers

Technological security is getting more and more complex everyday. The most recent discovery, made by researcher Math Vanhoef, involves a flaw when users connect to Wi-Fi where hackers can easily access important information. Although the flaw seems to target corporations rather than consumers, this new discovery is the most significant in years.
Hackers are able to scam their way in by duplicating wireless networks that change a person's encryption keys therefore making them vulnerable by exposing personal information that had been backed up and protected by the WPA2.
By negating the protection WPA2 offered, its easier for more people to be able to hack into devices and steal personal passwords and information. Fortunately, information protected by an addition technique like HTTPS, is still safe.
Vanhoef demonstrated how the attack works. In the demonstration, the attack was able to steal information from an Android phone that was actively using a wireless network with WPA2. Vanhoef notes that the hacker would have to be in close range for the attack to work. While this may alienate some people form attempting an attack, most hackers decide to take the chance.
Large corporations such as Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc., under which Google works, have begun to take measures while some like Microsoft, have already resolved the issue.
This is an important development in the technological sector because of the possible impact it will have on big brand names such as Apple and Google. The way in which they release new software updates is going to have an effect on their products and customers. For example, older Android phone users are going to have to be extra cautious since they don't receive new security updates.
