280 Character Tweets

Twitter now offers the ability to post 280 character tweets.  Before November 7, 2017, one of Twitter's competitive advantages was its brief sub 140 character messages.  It was know for its instant, short, and frequent communication.  However Twitter is trying to refresh its site by offering the ability to post tweets twice the previous length.  According to Twitter, 9% of tweets reached the 140 character limit before this update.  During the beta testing of the new tweet limit, only 1% of tweets reached the much larger 280.  Another surprising quantitative statistic is that only 5% of post-update tweets reached 140 characters.  Meanwhile Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, and China will not receive this update.  Mainly this is because these countries have relatively more condensed languages and do not use as many character to present the same message.  After 11 years, Twitter doubled the maximum tweet length to 280.

Even though many welcome this change, it is not what people really wanted.  For years people have complained about not having the ability to edit tweets.  Once they post a tweet it becomes impossible to edit, though it can be deleted. Many Twitter users could benefit from the ability to edit tweets including president Donald Trump.  Perhaps Twitter refuses to allow editing because popular tweets could be replaced with propaganda.  However many people have suggested that Twitter users could have a limited time-frame to edit their post. In protest, Marques Brownlee‏, a tech vlogger has posted the tweet below showing the overall dissatisfaction with the update.
