Vaults in the cemetery in the Colombian town of San Bernardo.

In a small Colombian town called San Bernardo, it is said that spontaneous mummification occurs. This was noticed in mid-1960s. Almost half of the people buried in the town's cementary turn into mummies after 5 or 6 years. There are many different beliefs as to why this phenomenon occurs, but the most interesting on to me was that people say that because they eat a lot of chayote, which is a vegetable, their bodies are preserved.

The secretary of culture and tourism from San Bernardo wants to bring tourism to the town with a museum of the mummies. Right now they have 11 mummies in their museum. The museum is called Mausoleum and it was recently added to the must-see list of attractions in the state of Cundinamarc in Colombia. They are now trying to make it a stop in the tours of Colombia. Now relating this to marketing, they are still not sure who the customers would be because not everyone finds this interesting. They are also still working on how to promote the museum. Although they are working on making San Bernardo a place for tourism, some of the members of the community are not comfortable with strangers coming in and seeing their dead relatives. Now we just have to wait and see whether they become a stop in the tours of Colombia.

  1. This is an interesting article to read, I did not know Colombia had mummies. We all know about the Egyptian mummies and I also know of the mummies in Guanajuato, Mexico. I hope they find a way to fund this and also get approval of the families.
