Neiman Marcus selects 10 'extreme' gifts for their Christmas catalogue each year. This year, someone offered up 'his and her caskets' as a possible addition to the catalogue. Obviously, the caskets did not make it into this years catalogue. The reason: they were lacking holiday spirit...Gifts that made the catalogue of Christmas's past:
-Falcon cage including a 20 karat gold-plated perch (Pictured above) for $150,000
-His and hers mummy caskets (real mummy included, of course)
-His and hers submarines
-Black angus steer (ordered on hoof or in steaks), silver-plated serving cart included
-A live camel
I chose this article because I am interested in the fashion marketing industry.
This is very smart marketing. Neiman Marcus uses these 10 extreme gifts as a way to get people to open up their Christmas catalogue. Customers will pick up the catalogue because they are curious to see these crazy gifts, and they end up seeing and purchasing something less extreme/pricy. Neiman Marcus does not expect to make profit from these gifts. They do this for promotion.
They are trying to stand out from their high-end competition.

I think it's really an interesting article, because I have never actually picked up a Neiman Marcus catalogue and now I want to so I can see what they will have. I agree that it is a great market strategy to attract customers even if they aren't buying the any of the 10 extreme gifts.
