Wal-Mart Preparing to Cut Hundreds of Headquarters Jobs This Week

Wal-Mart was to cut about 500 jobs this past Friday at their headquarters. Wal-Mart has its headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas and employs about 18,600 people in that region. This would affect hundreds of employees and their families. Also, the retailer was said to have told their department directors to cancel any travel planned for this past weekend. Wal-Mart is said to be the world's largest retailer and there has been talk about layoffs for months. The retailer is said to be having major struggles with its competition and higher costs. It is facing competition with many different companies such as Amazon.com, traditional grocery stores and discount chains. Any layoffs by the retailer will also have a ripple effect through other large companies in the same region as they work closely with Wal-Mart.

The Wal-Mart CEO Doug McMillon said in a conference call back in August, "for the back half of the year, we will manage these items closely with a continued commitment to efficiency, cutting cost where appropriate, even in a period of investment."

I believe that this relates to the 4 P's and specifically to the price since it is concerned with the kind of competition in the target market and the cost of the whole marketing mix.
