How ‘Fortnite’ Defied Convention and Became a Hit
By: Dalila Perez
In this article, the current buzz about Fortnite is discussed. When Fortnite was first released, it did not receive very much attention believe it or not. In the beginning, the game was being sold in stores for 40 dollars. However, this was not working for Epic Games; the company that created Fortnite. In order to try and fix this problem. Epic Games came up with the idea to release Fortnite as a free version alongside the paid version. Doing this allowed players to get a sort of free sample of the game which later helped drive their sales. At the start of the game's launch; in July, Epic Games did not attain the sales that they were expecting. However, towards the beginning of January, the game started to become a hit with teenagers so much so, the game drew in an overwhelming 40 million players. This rapid growth caused servers to crash, however, the attention this game received continued to grow.
In the beginning, Epic Games did not receive much attention from their new creation, however, through creative and well thought out plans, Epic Games was able to better market their creation through the provision of free access to the game allowing players to experience a small taste of the game and therefore, skyrocketing their sales. By providing the free version of the game, Epic Games was able to better market what they had to offer.
As a college student, this game attracts my attention. Every day I am focused on school, work and any other extracurriculars I may have that day. I am stressed all the time trying to get my work done. This game is a great way to relieve my stress. It is fun and for that reason, I believe that the college student market is the perfect market for this game. This game has received a ton of attention and I believe it is attention well deserved.

Ooooh that is interesting that they resorted to a free sample once they saw their prices weren't really working for people. I think that shows how strongly they believed in their product and were willing to release it at no charge to let it speak for itself. Free publicity!
ReplyDeleteI actually played this game during Closed Beta, which is a test phase for the game, and I didn't think it would do well because it was entering a genre that was already being dominated by another game, PUBG (Playerunknown's Battlegrounds). However, after observing and participating in the game over a course of a few months, it has surprised me at how much attention the game has received.
