First person shooter is a video game genre that are typically war themed, however, games like Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite have expanded that idea. Recently, the game Fortnite has been the most sold videogame in the world. Granted that the other mainstream video game producers have not released a video game since the release of Fortnite. Many people assumed that "the runaway videogame hit from independent developer Epic Games would hurt franchise properties from publishers"

Having Fortnite be the most successful FPS video game of 2017-18 seems like it would be a threat to the other video games but in reality it has done the opposite. Fortnite's take off in the video game market has expanded the market and opened the door to success for competitors. "Activision believes Fortnite has added more to the market than it has taken." That is because the game has attracted a wider range of followers. It has reeled in those who were already fans and then those who were not. That is why the net segment revenue has increased, because Fortnite has  "popularized a style of play." It is very interesting how a competitor not only allows other competition to succeed but it is also succeeding on its own. The competition is doing the marketing for them.
