Major public media organizations have bought the podcasting app "Pocket Casts" as a part of their plan to "exercise more control over the distribution of their content." These organizations (NPR, WNYC Studios, WBEZ Chicago and This American Life ) have attempted to launch their own podcasting app but they have not been nearly as successful as the Australian owned Pocket Casts. The Pocket Casts app is unique in the fact that it offers about 300,000 different shows.
Why did those major media companies make this giant purchase? The reason for the purchase is that it save those companies money and instead makes money. Having the largest podcasting system allows for those companies to save the money they would pay for advertising and airtime. Now that they own the Pocket Casts not only do they not pay for advertising and airtime they can also charge other podcasting business for the same thing. The numbers were not disclosed but even if it was a large amount it is a smart investment because it will lead to larger revenues and more listeners.
