After Beating Back Coronavirus, Hong Kong Looks to Revive Its Economy Without a Relapse

After two weeks of no new, locally transmitted coronavirus infections, the city is easing restrictions. Health experts say that the city's success in containing the pandemic is due to everyone wearing masks and strict quarantining. It is also known that most of the cases reported in Hong Kong since the coronavirus outbreak began in January have been imported. Therefore, they banned non-citizens from entering the city since Mar. 25. But last week, authorities stated they will allow children and business people to cross the boarder for school or essential business trips.

Hong Kong's new normal may look like how it does now with masked citizens, temperature checks at shops and office buildings and plastic barriers between solo dinners. Although the government never imposed a full lockdown, meaning restaurants, public transport and shops remained opened, Hong Kong's economy suffered a lot because of the pandemic. However, authorities will do a cash handout of about $1,290 to each local residents, and they will wage subsides to employers who pledge not to lay off workers.

Health officials have warned people not to let their guard down because the virus could incubate for more than two weeks and there might be silent carriers in the city.
