Mind Those Manners: Kids Need Lessons in Email and Phone Etiquette
Feb. 11, 2020 5:30 am ET
This was a great article to read, especially since I have two
little boys growing up in an evolutionary world. This article in a nutshell talks
about how kids are growing into young adults who are unprepared to even write a
simple formal email. The article spoke about several people who are actively
trying to prep pre-teens to send emails properly. Ms. McCraw is actively trying
to teach her middle-school students proper email etiquette by having her students
email her to discuss assignments and sharing Google docs. A human-resource
manger Melissa Griffin stated, “many large
companies now offer basic communications training for new employees, such as
how to politely answer a phone.” This is even a problem in the corporate world,
which is very worrisome. The way we can combat this seemly simple problem is by
educating our children. Like even a couple parents are already having
their kids practice by sending emails to family members to request donations
for various activities. Ultimately, the article blamed technology. That because
of Uber eats and online orders like Amazon and Walmart you never even have to
pick up the phone to call anyone, yet alone send an email. Lastly, they
informed their audience how to write a good email:
1. Craft a clear subject line: This is an increasingly important digital courtesy in an age of overstuffed inboxes, because the subject line can help people sort, tag and find the email later.
2. Use proper salutations and closings: This helps set the tone for the communication.
3. Don’t include text-speak: Avoid abbreviations and emojis in emails.
4. Minimize the use of exclamation points.
5. Don’t write in all capital letters.
