Apple Music Overtakes Spotify in Paid U.S. Subscribers
February was in fact a great month for Apple Music, overtaking their fierce competitor, Spotify, for paid subscriptions in the U.S.
Taking a look at the bigger picture, Spotify still remains at the top spot for overall users worldwide, but Apple Music is hoping to make a change to that with an impressive monthly growth rate from 2.6% to 3% compared to Spotify's growth at 1.5%-2%. Also Apple Music has the edge at the Global growth rate with numbers of 2.4% to 2.8% compared to Spotify at 2% to 2.3%.
Spotify in reality only remains at the front of the pack due to their free subscription option with the downside of ads. Another reason could be the bundle with their partner Hulu. Customers can enjoy a music service along with a TV streaming service. Apple have retaliated though, with an Apple Music account consumers can enjoy subscription offers to TV shows, video games and
magazines.
Apple have actually spent a huge amount on commercials, twice more than Spotify. But Spotify excel by getting their customers hooked with the free subscription and then they eventually pay due to the constant ads. Spotify have also fired back by teaming up with Samsung in order to make Spotify the default music app for its users, this move was because Apple Music is already downloaded onto every Apple device on purchase and therefore it appears easier to sign up for that instead of downloading Spotify and signing up.
I decided to use this article as I am fascinated by competition, I love to watch multiple companies going at each other like a game of chess. Both companies are doing their upmost best to market better than their rival. They are copying their rivals already successful marketing idea and are trying to better it. For instance Spotify has a successful partnership with Hulu so Apple tried to out do the Bundle and offered their customers access to not only TV but magazines and video games.
