Microsoft Xbox Doing Away with Physical Discs

The new Xbox One S will not have the ability to run physical video game discs anymore. This will bring the video game industry even closer to being all-digital. The recent trend is that gamers are no longer going into stores and purchasing hard copies of video games. It seems as though people want their video games to be delivered to them much like their music and movies are. When you download a video game online it is quite beneficial to the producer. They avoid packaging, shipping, and other materials that cost them money to bring the game to the consumer. According to Sarah Needleman, about 60% of US teens are now downloading their video games online. However, this is bad news for video game stores, such as GameStop, who are likely to be put out of business due to this trend.

This is relevant to our class, because businesses like GameStop will now have to come up with a completely different product or service. Microsoft will also have to do a decent job at promoting their online subscription service so users will pay to access several different games without even having to leave the couch. There is no doubt that this is more convenient for consumers, and they also do not have to deal with lost or scratched discs.
