Top studios
that licensed their shows to Netflix want their products back while Netflix
fights to keep their hits.
Netflix is currently
facing the fact that they could lose their number one hit show “The Office” and
other popular TV shows, such as “Friends”. NBCUniversal, the owner of “The
Office”, are now trying to start their own streaming service and now want their
titles back for their own platform. Netflix has been dominated the streaming
service business for years, where more than 70 percent of their viewership is
dedicated to library programming, such as reruns from other studios. Now, as
the programming suppliers are creating their own streaming services, Netflix
now must face the prospects of losing their most popular shows or paying more
to keep them.
This article
relates to the marketing concept in several different aspects. A vital prominent
aspect that needs to be considered is the competitors. Hollywood Studios, as
described in the article, are now starting their own streaming services that
could rival Netflix in programming and prices. In addition, while Netflix done
rely on original programming, their shows don’t pull the same numbers as the
shows owned by these big networks. Netflix now has to reassess their company
value to see what they can do to hold on to their subscriber count. One way
that they could accomplish this is to look toward their customer base. In
looking into their customer’s history, they can see what types of programming
their customers are into and see what they can produce or being in to satisfy
their customer’s needs. In addition, they need to reevaluate the original
programming that they have. Some titles are watched more than others, and
Netflix could take out the programming that the movies or TV shows that are not
as watched as the others and have more quality content. In reassessing their
original products, they can move on to new product development, where they can
create new content based on what their customers want and can be in new
subscribers. Another way that Netflix can combat against their competitors is
to redevelop their target market. Since a majority of their target market
watches TV reruns, Netflix needs to start marketing to other audiences as they
could start to lose their most marketable programs.
I choose
this article because it is interesting to see all the big Hollywood media
companies getting into the streaming industry. In addition, this also shows
that these companies are starting to notice the trends that people are not
purchasing cable and relying on streaming services to watch their favorite
movies and TV shows. As a subscriber to multiple streaming platforms, it is
interesting to see what services will end up with their original programming
and what they will have to produce to gain subscribers.
Your post is interesting! I use Netflix very often and one of my favorite shows is "Friends". I agree that it would be intriguing to see which services will have their own original programming to gain subscribers. I think that if there are too many options, then people would not want to subscribe and pay for all of them so in a way it could be bad?
