Microsoft’s New Xbox One S Won’t Play Videogame Discs

This article is about Microsoft Corporation creating their first ever console that does not use discs or cartridges. This could be a game changer in the video game world. This innovation on Xboxs would "bring the industry a step closer to an all digital, streaming future".

This device is said to come out on May 7th, 2019 and will have a cost of $249. the reason why Microsoft has decided to make this change is because they have many statistics on how the world of video has been changing through the years. They have realized that they are way more people downloading games rather than buying the discs and cartridges. Statistics show that from the Fall of 2015 to the Spring of 2019, the percentage of purchased downloads has increased by almost double the amount. “This transition to digital gaming is going to happen,” said Piper Jaffray analyst Mike Olson. “It’s just a matter of when, not if.” He predicts nearly all videogames will be sold in digital form by 2022".

In the other hand, there might be a down fall to this type of changes. “This isn’t for everybody,” said Jeff Gattis, who manages marketing for platforms and devices. Microsoft is looking to appeal to people who grew up with digital media and don’t want to pay for parts they don’t need". Also, discs also have a break down, some get scratches and will stop completely working.

To me, this is a relatable article. Now a days everything is digitized. Players can assure that it is easier to change games from their downloads rather than getting up and changing the disc. The fact that Microsoft is trying to keep up with the new technology only shows their willing less of staying in the competition longer. I will not be surprise if other consoles start doing this.

  1. Hey Andrea, I really liked that you selected this WSJ post to blog about. I am interested in this blogging because I used to play Xbox a lot and I remember going through a change in how I supplied my games. Totally digitized, I would purchase and download games just like you would on Iphones. I believe this is a huge change in the gaming industry as it marks the beginning of gaming consoles going disk-less.
